The governor of the province of Buenos Aires Daniel Scioli today played down media hype about his role and the October mid-term elections.

“I, as governor, have to look towards the future,” said Scioli. “This is a parliamentary election, let’s place it in that context. Meanwhile the executive mandates carry on”. He underlined that “the list of the people’s problems was the most important” to him at this moment in time.

Scioli also  voiced his opinion in favour of a change in the electoral system in Argentina, calling for the end of mid-term elections.

Scioli expressed his beliefs that the people are more preoccupied by who is leading the country rather than quarrels between politicians and that the campaigns, which  currently take place every 18 months “altered the government’s agenda” and sometimes held a rather “dramatic tone”.

Scioli further denied that he had been under pressure from the Casa Rosada before candidates’ lists for the August primary elections that were revealed over the weekend. Scioli was rumoured to be in talks with Tigre mayor, Sergio Massa, who is running for the opposition Frente Renovador, but has since declared his support for official candidate, Martín Insaurralde.

Scioli further refused to move forward the discussion on the presidential succession, simply stating that “the president had been very clear” in dismissing claims she was planning on staying on after 2015.
